At BLS he helped analyze the data that informs national decisions about jobs, wages, and working conditions<span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">—<strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">gaining a deep understanding of how policy choices affect real people.</strong> </span>After four years at BLS, Edward moved to England to continue his studies, earning both a master’s and Ph.D in economic history from the University of Cambridge.</p><h3>Edward has also shaped the economic debate through his blog and award-winning podcast: <a href="https://open.spotify.com/show/57poekfU8PTW0fEBjEKrXo?si=090505d73d6e4503" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">The Demand Side.</a></h3><p>On his show, Edward commonly hosts Nobel laureates, central bank chairmen, and academics who are dedicated to building economies that better serve the working class.</p>

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">Health care is a right, not a privilege.</span><br><br></h4><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Providing Healthcare Coverage for Those in Need</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Expand Medicaid.</strong></span></p><p><strong>Georgia is one of just ten states that hasn’t fully expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. </strong>This isn’t responsible government—it’s dangerous decision making.</p><p>Georgia needs to stand by its workers who can’t afford coverage or aren’t provided coverage by their employer. If we are to be a place where those at the bottom have a chance to get ahead, it’s time to join the 40 other states that have expanded Medicaid. In doing so, Georgia would receive enhanced federal funding and insure hundreds of thousands more people.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Protecting Expectant Mothers</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Increase the transparency of Georgia’s Maternal Mortality Review Committee.</strong></span></p><p>Georgia excels at many things, but maternal health is not one of them. <strong>Georgia has the second highest maternal mortality rate of any state in the US. </strong>Medicaid cuts, limited telehealth options and broadband deserts, and closures of rural hospitals have led to increases in maternal deaths.</p><p><strong>For Black mothers, the situation is critical.</strong> Black women make up more than half of Georgia’s maternal deaths—dying at a rate twice that of white women.</p><p>Last year, Georgia relaunched its Maternal Mortality Review Committee to address this crisis, but the legislature won’t release any information regarding who serves on the committee or the committee’s findings. We need transparency on this issue. <strong>Expectant mothers deserve to know who is working to make it safer to have a baby in Georgia.</strong></p>

Healthcare

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live.</span><br><br></h4><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Increasing Access to Affordable Housing</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Establish minimum lot sizes for new residential subdivisions.</strong></span></p><p>Georgia’s housing shortage has made homeownership harder, and rents higher than ever.</p><p><strong>At the root of the shortage is the state’s restrictive zoning laws.</strong> Too often local zoning codes and lot size requirements determine the size of the homes that builders can build—and the larger the lot size, the larger and more expensive the home.</p><p><strong>Our campaign supports the establishment of state-wide minimum lot size requirements so builders can build smaller, more affordable homes. </strong>This will increase the total number of homes per acre, which will down average rent prices and give thousands of Georgia families a chance at homeownership.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Housing the Homeless</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Launch a “Race to Zero” initiative to end Georgia homelessness within five years.</strong></span></p><p><strong>More than 12,000 Georgians — including hundreds of unaccompanied youths — experience homelessness each year. </strong>If we are to address this problem, we must adopt a housing first approach that prioritizes offering shelter to those who need it. I look forward to working with other members of the Georgia State Senate to build a program that aims to end Georgia homelessness within five years.</p>

<p>Everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to live.</p>

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">Government should work for the people — not the powerful.</span><br><br></h4><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Expanding Voter Eligibility</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Enact same day voter registration and end voter purging.</strong></span></p><p><strong>No eligible Georgian should lose their right to vote because they missed a deadline or skipped an election. </strong>Georgia should end voter registration purges and allow&nbsp;same-day registration&nbsp;so every citizen can make their voice heard.</p><p>Democracy works best when everyone participates.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Making Government Truly Representative</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Establish a full-time legislature and fair pay for lawmakers.</strong></span></p><p>Georgia’s legislature handles billions in state business, yet meets only 40 days a year and pays salaries too low for ordinary citizens to serve. That leaves governing to the wealthy or well-connected. <strong>By creating a&nbsp;full-time legislature with fair pay, we can build a government that reflects Georgia’s people — teachers, nurses, small-business owners, and working families alike.</strong></p>

<p>Government should work for the people — not the powerful.</p>

Government Integrity

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">A strong Georgia is one where every child and family has enough to eat — not just during election season, but every single day.</span></h4><p>No child in Georgia should go hungry. Yet nearly one in four Georgia children lives in a home without enough food. Hunger holds kids back in school and hurts families across our state. We can fix this — with compassion and common sense.<br><br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Ensuring that No Child Goes Hungry During the Summer Months</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Reinstate Georgia’s SUN Bucks program.</strong></span></p><p>During the school year, most low-income students get free or reduced-price meals — but summer leaves too many children hungry. Congress created the SUN Bucks program to alleviate the problem, providing $120 per child per month when school is out; however, Governor Kemp opted out of the program, claiming it was too costly for the state.</p><p>The truth? It would cost Georgia just&nbsp;$4.5 million to administer, while sending&nbsp;$138 million in aid&nbsp;to struggling families. That’s a trade any moral government should make. I will fight to bring back SUN Bucks so that every child in Georgia has enough to eat.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Tackling Food Deserts</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Provide tax credits for constructing grocery stores in food deserts.</strong></span></p><p>No family should have to drive 20 miles just to buy fresh produce. Yet nearly two million Georgians — including half a million children — live in areas without easy access to affordable, healthy food. As state senator, I will propose legislation that offers tax incentives for grocery store developers&nbsp;who open stores in underserved areas — rural or urban—because access to healthy food shouldn’t require a trip to the gas station.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Strengthening Our Food Banks and Meeting Nutrition Emergencies</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Expand state funding for food banks and create a Strategic Food Reserve</strong></span></p><p>When our food banks thrive, families don’t go hungry. But after federal SNAP cuts, food banks across Georgia are overwhelmed. This has caused food pantries to ration portions, and oftentimes pantries run out of food altogether. As state senator, I will introduce legislation that&nbsp;increases funding for the Georgia Nutritional Assistance Program (GNAP)&nbsp;so that food banks can meet their growing demands. Additionally, I support the creation of a Strategic Food Reserve that would provide full SNAP benefits for eligible Georgians during periods when Congress fails to fund the program.</p>

<p>A strong Georgia is one where every child and family has enough to eat — not just during election season, but every single day.</p>

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">Georgia’s farmers deserve a government that works as hard as they do.</span><br></h4><p>Georgia’s farmers feed our state and power our economy. Agriculture is the state’s leading industry, contributing nearly&nbsp;$75 billion a year in output. <strong>But too many of the people who make that possible are being squeezed by rising costs, complex grant systems, and a lack of state-level support. </strong>If we want a robust state economy, we must invest in those who put food on our tables and keep our rural communities alive.</p><p></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Supporting Small Farms</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Offer grant writing services to small farmers.</strong></span></p><p>For small farms, every season is a risk. Between weather, volatile prices, and unpredictable crop yields, it can be difficult to cover operating expenses year after year. <strong>Because of this, many of the state’s small farms depend on&nbsp;state and federal grants&nbsp;to stay afloat — but the red tape involved in grant applications can be nearly impossible to navigate.</strong></p><p>When a small farm’s grant application is denied, it can mean the end of the operation altogether. That’s unacceptable. The State of Georgia should help level the playing field by <strong>offering&nbsp;free grant-writing assistance&nbsp;to farms under 50 acres.</strong> This small investment of state resources will pay off many times over. It will help farmers secure critical funding that will keep them in business and allow them focus on what they do best:&nbsp;farming.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Helping New Farmers Establish Themselves</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Provide tax credits to new farmers.</strong></span></p><p>Georgia’s future depends on the next generation of farmers. But for new farmers — those in their first ten years — the obstacles are steep: land costs, equipment, and limited access to credit all make it hard to get started.</p><p><strong>We can help change that by offering&nbsp;targeted tax credits to new farmers. </strong>This will allow them to reinvest more of their earnings back into their operations, giving them an opportunity to build a stronger capital base for years when crop yields fall short. We must give new farmers the breathing room they need to succeed.<br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Rebuilding the Agriculture Workforce</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Increase funding for agriculture education.</strong></span></p><p>The&nbsp;average Georgia farmer is nearly 60 years old. This statistic should be a wake-up call for anyone involved in Georgia agribusiness.</p><p><strong>The problem is that too few young people are being introduced to agriculture as a viable career path. </strong>Legislators should require that&nbsp;every public high school in Georgia&nbsp;offer agriculture education as part of its curriculum. By exposing more students to modern farming, agribusiness, and food science, we can inspire a new generation to carry Georgia’s proud agricultural tradition forward — keeping rural communities strong and our economy growing from the ground up.</p><p><strong>We need to prepare the next generation of farmers now — because farming isn’t just an industry; it’s a heritage that sustains us all.</strong></p>

Georgia’s unemployment rate is low and our economy is growing, <strong>yet we rank ninth in the nation in income inequality.</strong> That means too many working families are still struggling to make ends meet while the wealthy get out ahead.</p><p><strong>One big reason behind Georgia’s high level of inequality is the state’s regressive tax code.</strong> In 2022, Governor Kemp and the legislature passed a law that eliminated graduated tax brackets — the system that asked those who earn more to pay more. All Georgians now pay the same flat rate of 5.19%, whether they make $30,000 or $300,000 a year. This means working-class families now pay a larger portion of their income in taxes than millionaires do. It also means less food on the table and few opportunities for those at the margins. It’s time we fix this. <strong>I’ll fight to reinstate graduated tax brackets so that everyone pays their fair share.</strong><br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Growing the Economy from the Bottom Up</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Increase strategic investments and create an Economic Development Bank to revitalize Georgia’s cities.</strong></span></p><p>There are far more Georgians in the middle and working class than there are at the very top — which means our economy grows fastest when prosperity starts at the bottom and builds its way up. <strong>But too many of our small towns and cities—and the people who live there—are being left behind in today’s economy.</strong></p><p>Over the past decade, Georgia has attracted new residents and businesses, yet that growth hasn’t reached every corner of our state. <strong>Atlanta’s population and economy are booming, while smaller cities — especially those in South Georgia — have lost people and opportunity.</strong> This imbalance hurts everyone. Atlanta now faces overcrowding and infrastructure strain, while other communities lack the very workforce and energy that once fueled them.</p><p><strong>Georgia’s long-term success shouldn’t depend on one metro area — it should be tied to the state’s total potential.</strong> Our state legislature needs to shift its focus from what Atlanta needs to what Georgia needs—and what Georgia needs is for small cities and towns to thrive again.</p><p>We can do this by prioritizing revitalization and increasing investments in the industries of tomorrow. Specifically, our campaign supports:</p><ol><li><p><strong>The creation of a Georgia Economic Development Bank</strong>&nbsp;— a state-level institution that invests directly in local revitalization projects. This will put people to work now and pave the way for future private investment.</p></li><li><p><strong>Boosting strategic investments&nbsp;in industries</strong> that create good-paying jobs and enhance Georgia’s regional competitiveness, such as infrastructure, green energy, and advanced agriculture.</p></li></ol>

<h4><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);">Every student in Georgia deserves a great public education — no exceptions.</span><br><br></h4><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Improving Primary and Secondary Education</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">End private school vouchers.</strong></span></p><p>Private school vouchers undermine our public-school systems in a variety of ways. <strong>The first is that the use of public funds for private schools sends the message all Georgians that our leaders have given up on public school education.</strong> Our elected officials should be doing everything in their power to improve Georgia’s public schools, not bankroll well-to-do private schools.</p><p>More critically, <strong>vouchers cripple the funding mechanism of public schools. </strong>Directing state tax dollars to private schools not only takes away funding that could have been spent on public schools, but because state funds for public institutions are based on enrollment, when students move from public to private school, public schools see their funding cut and their per-pupil costs rise.</p><p><strong>Private schools can—and should—support themselves. I will vote to put an end to private school vouchers.</strong></p><p></p><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Incorporate a poverty weight into Georgia’s formula for funding public schools.</strong></span></p><p><strong>Georgia is one of only six states that doesn’t account for poverty in its formula for allocating funds for public schools.</strong> Georgia’s equalization grant (based on assessed property values) is intended to reduce the funding gaps between rich and poor school districts; however, the impact of these grants has been eroded over the years, leaving many low-wealth school districts worse off than they once were. <strong>Lawmakers should amend the state’s Quality Basic Education formula to include a&nbsp;poverty weight so that schools that serve disadvantaged students get the resources they need to help every child succeed.</strong><br><br></p><h3><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Making College More Affordable</span></h3><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Increase Funding for the University System of Georgia</strong></span></p><p>Not since 2001 has the State of Georgia met its obligation to fund 75% of the costs of the University System of Georgia (USG). Indeed, in 2024, legislators funded only 57% of the state’s higher education costs. <strong>This shortfall has forced colleges and universities to bear a larger fiscal burden, which they pass on to students through increased tuition and fees.</strong> I will fight to ensure that the USG is adequately funded.</p><p></p><h5>ACTION:</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Create Hope+.</strong></span></p><p>The HOPE Scholarship has opened the door for thousands of students to attend college and university, but too many students still struggle with housing and food insecurity during their college years. The DREAMS Scholarship has helped students meet non-tuition related expenses, but the reality is the program doesn’t go far enough. This is why our campaign supports the creation of HOPE+. <strong>HOPE+ is a program&nbsp;that would provide full room-and-board vouchers for students in need — because getting into college means little if you can’t afford to stay.</strong></p>
